Green Flag Award
St Cuthbert’s was proudly awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with distinction. This is the second consecutive year that the school has received this prestigious award. The award was the culmination of a year-long collective effort by the whole school.
Our various eco-projects are listed below.
- Over the course of the year our school has committed to recycling: paper, card plastic and food waste.
- We have an Eco-garden in which our Gardening Club has grown a variety of plants. We have a wildflower meadow, a herb bed, a vegetable bed and several flower beds.
- Our Eco-garden has variety of planters made from old tyres and reclaimed wood, composters, birdhouses, bird feeders (made by the school’s eco-committee) , a hedgehog house and a garden shed with water buts for collecting rainwater.
- Our Eco-garden also contains our Eco Greenhouse and Eco Planter. Our greenhouse is constructed from over 1600 reused 2-litre plastic bottles. These were collected by our families and prepared for use by the children. The Eco planter is built from 500 eco-bricks which were made over a two-year period by pupils and parents.
- We have recently planted a hedgerow with over 450 saplings along our perimeter fence. Every child in the school has planted at least one sapling.
- Several children were involved in running an eco-refill shop throughout the year. The shop sold a variety of household eco—friendly products in reused bottles such as hand wash, washing-up liquid, bubble bath, laundry liquid and dog shampoo.
